PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
Program Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
- Primary emphasis on the development of practice skills in a number of specialized pharmacy practice areas
- Flexibility provided to adapt to the needs and interests of the individual resident while providing the basic foundation to develop professional practice skills
- Goal of producing competent generalists capable of functioning in multiple roles within a pharmacy system
The Residency Experience
- Three positions offered each year
- Five week orientation to pharmacy operations and clinical pharmacy consultation services including pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation, and nutrition support
- Five week rotations (in general), with a focus on required rotations during the first half of the year
- Three weeks designated for project work and holiday coverage

Teaching Opportunities
- Co-precept 4th year pharmacy students
- Instruct a variety of resident and attending physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers using a range of methods
- Participate in didactic and facilitation courses through Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy
- Complete an optional teaching certificate
Longitudinal Residency Activities
- Weekday evening operational service commitment of approximately 16 hours per month
- Weekend day shift service coverage every third weekend
- Operational service commitment every twelfth weekend
- Clinical service commitment during remaining weekends (including one major holiday)
- Day shift clinical coverage the week of a major holiday (weekday and weekend)
- Research project designed to improve pharmacy services or to achieve a specific research objective
- Results presented at internal and external symposia in platform and poster form
- Manuscript suitable for publication prepared
- ACPE-accredited seminar presentation targeted to a pharmacist and/or pharmacy technician audience
- Various longitudinal medication use and drug information projects to improve understanding of policy and procedure development
- Active participation in medical emergencies following successful completion of the BLS and ACLS curricula

Qualifications of Applicants
Applicants must possess a PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy or a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee certificate at the time the residency begins and must be eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Alabama.
Application Information
Applications are accepted November through December each year. All materials should be submitted via PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application). Applications are due by January 2nd.

- Letter of intent including the reasons why Baptist Health Princeton Hospital is a good fit for you, your post-residency goals, and how a residency with us will help you reach your goals
- Curriculum vitae
- Official transcripts of all professional pharmacy education
- Three electronic references completed by healthcare professionals who can attest to your clinical practice abilities and aptitudes
- Two references must be from APPE rotation preceptors. Applicants with unique situations (e.g., graduation more than 1-2 years ago) should contact the RPD for guidance.
- Detailed comments must be provided within the PhORCAS reference form; supplementary letters of recommendation will not be considered.
